The ABA Experience

The Asia Business Academy exists to provide an international centre of excellence on key aspects of Asia Business and to serve as an umbrella organisation for all Asia related activities in the University.

The Asia Business Academy aims to develop a unique Asian knowledge base, cutting –edge skills of cross-cultural collaboration and Asia related competencies that prepare students and professionals for doing business with Asia in the Asian way.

For many students and executives, courses of the type ‘doing business with…’ conjure up images of lectures, taking notes and absorbing a wealth of information about say country, region, industrial sectors, legislation and cultures. We do some of that, but that is not the main thrust of our effort.

Education and training for doing business with Asia at the Asia Business Academy has a very different purpose. We deal with dimensions of Asian know-how, know-why and more importantly know-who – all of which make up the Asia Business Intelligence required to connect and succeed with people in Asia Business that count and people who matter.

How do we do it?

There are three essential elements.

It requires leadership of the learning experience that comes with doing business with Asia : faculty with the ability to lead the learning of students and managers by stretching their minds, by questioning, by inspiring different perspectives, by helping to shift viewpoints.

Leadership of the learning experience also relies on our faculty’s expertise in working with the various components of the learners mindsets. These include diversity – their backgrounds, companies, institutions and perceptions ; experience –the problems they have faced, their successes and failures; and priorities- the jobs they would like to have and problems managers will go back to on Monday morning. Managers learn best through having their individual mindset confronted with a challenge to achieve success in operating in cultures other than their own.

The second essential factor is the Academy’s distinctive competence in curriculum innovation to provide this challenge. On our program we use research based case studies –all carefully crafted through the issues that prepare students for quality jobs and which give managers confidence for working with Asia. Our programs and courses start from the obvious, the well-known, the certainties and the perceptions; then move on to the unknown, the areas of hesitation and some parts of the programs even lead to the collapse of the pre-conceived models; and ultimately to more open insights and perspectives capable of responding to doing business with Asia in the Asian way.

The third essential factor is that our program

1. meets the clearly expressed needs of demanding business school students including European exchange/international students and company clients as applicable.
2. is deeply influenced by current and strategic developments in the Asian marketplace and the recruiting needs of employers.

Part of the cross-cultural challenge we provide comes from the diversity of cultures we address in our program. This mind-opening element of our program forces participants to think and jump ‘out of the box’ and enables participants to see business from an Asian perspective.

We have a very special relationship with our Asia consortium – our sponsors and partners – who devote a considerable amount of time and money helping us define and develop our programs.

The Asia Business Academy aims to accelerate and enhance the knowledge and competence building required for doing business with Asia the Asia way.
